Reported balance

Definition

The account balance a lender sent to the credit bureaus in its latest update, which may differ from what you owe today.

Your report shows a balance as of the date the lender last reported, usually once a month. For cards, that's typically the statement balance around the closing date. That's why a card you paid off last week can still show a balance, and why the three bureaus can show different balances for the same card when updates land on different days.

Most score versions use the latest reported balances for utilization, so the timing of a payment decides what counts. Experian says a payoff can take up to two months to show on your reports. If you can't wait, as during a mortgage application, a lender can request a rapid rescore with proof of the payment.
